MS3209 Being Malays in Singapore [2220]
A starting question for this module is “Who are the Malays of Singapore?” Answering this question leads to further questions with regards to their identity, their socio-economic status and their concerns. Taking a socio-historical perspective, this module explores the different issues pertaining to Singapore Malays’ identity, socio-economic status and concerns. A theme that runs through this module is the re-production of portrayals of Malays in Singapore. The module is divided into three topics of discussion: Topic 1 introduces students to approaches to studying Malays of Singapore. Topics 2 & 3 look at different dimensions of their life in Singapore. Life as Singapore citizens covers Malay experiences of living in multiethnic and meritocratic Singapore society. Focus is given to public housing, education and nation building. Life in “the Singapore Malay community" covers topics on ethnic identity, class, self-perceptions and leadership.
