MS2210 Malay Culture & Society [2220]
The main theme of this module is processes of change in Malay societies and cultural practices as well as the varying attempts at creating certainties in the course of these changes. Using social constructionism approach the module looks at negotiations and contestations in creating certainties. Part 1 will introduce you to some important works on Malay culture and society. In Part 2, we look at how in encountering “others”, Malay culture and society has historically gone through massive changes. Attention is directed at how these encounters brought about changes that have implications to Malay societies until today. Part 3 highlights how various factions in Malay societies navigate changes that have bearings on cultural practices. Focus is given to popular culture practitioners, Malay middle class, Malay women and indigenous peoples in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore as illustrations.
