Types of assessment tools
There are many different sorts of assessments and tools you can use to design your own. The Canvas Quizzes and Canvas Assignments tools can be used with most assessments.
Begin by considering the following:
- What are your objectives for this assessment?
- What are you assessing in terms of knowledge and/or skills?
- What kind of questions or activities will you use to evaluate your students?

Assignment and Quizzes
On the left navigation bar, you will see Assignments and Quizzes as separate items.
The table below shows when you should use a Canvas Assignment rather than a Canvas Quiz.

Assignment is the larger category and subsumes Quiz. Items listed here will add toward the overall weightage for the course.
Assessment Types
- Discussion
- Quiz. Note: The Quiz item can be created here but the questions are edited under Quizzes.
These can take the form of:
- Project reports/ Lab reports/ Essays / Papers
- Providing a URL (for a blog or other online work)
- A media recording
- Files for presentations
- Research publications
Advanced features
- For essay-type submissions, Turnitin will be used to analyze similarity and track plagiarism.
- Assignments can be Group group members can work on together and receive a common grade and comments.
Submission features
- Student will be able to upload and submit one or more files
- Student will be able to submit multiple versions of an assignment (e.g., draft and final versions)
Grading features
- Because auto-grading is not possible, all assignment submissions require grader input.
- Graders can include in-line feedback comments and annotations on a submitted file
- When Require Peer Reviews is selected, students can be assigned to read and evaluate the work of their classmates.

Quiz is where you will can create or edit the different question types.

- Auto-scored question types can be used in quizzes
- Assessments of knowledge retention
- Multiple short answer questions on a range of topics can be used in quizzes
Advanced features
- Quizzes can be practice, graded, or ungraded.
- Shuffle answers is possible.
- Time limit is possible.
- Allow multiple attempts is possible.
- Respondus LockDown Browser can be used to block web searches and the use of other software apps while attempting quizzes.
Submission features
- Students can respond to a variety of question types.
Grading features
- Contains auto-grading question types (multiple-choice, fill in the blank, matching, etc.)

Canvas allows you to assign the assignment/quiz to specific users. This may apply for remedial or extra credit assignments.
